I just received a Thunderbolt-Ethernet adapter, purchased with the hope to improve online backups and syncs through CrashPlan and Dropbox. From Speedtest.net by Ookla, the results are interesting and, I have to say, disappointing in one important detail: upload speeds are essentially unchanged from my usual Wifi connection (an AirPort Time Capsule).

The first test, with the adapter connected directly to the Thunderbolt port on a MacBook Air:

The second test, via Wifi:

And the third test, with the ethernet adapter connected to an Apple Cinema Display:

I did the last test to confirm that the Cinema Display does not impede the results.

I’m certainly pleased to nearly double my download speeds when at my desk, although the Wifi is speedy enough for most video streaming and download tasks. Not improving on upload speeds means backups/syncs to the cloud will remain sluggish although when my iMac downloads those same files, because it is connected by ethernet, the same file arrives in a blink of an eye.

I had not noticed until the final edits of this text that my connection is performing better than 84-87% of those in France. That’ll do.
